Story behind the song
I wrote quite a few songs while working in an iron foundry. A tool and die tech named Rex Haney dared me to write an song about another tool and die tech named Bill Saville who word cowboy boots. Rex gave me the name of the song. The rest came from my imagination. Bill came from a farm in Illinois and did once drive a Mustang.
Lyrics
TOOL AND DIE COWBOY chorus Tool and die cowboy, tool and die Tool and die cowboy, tool and die He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke He never makes the young girls cry Tool and die cowboy, tool and die Billy started as a young boy somewhere in Illinois His family was humble, an old rope his only toy He learned to tie a lasso, rounded up a wild fence post And rode into the sunset on an old white mare named Ghost He saw programs on the TV, the ones he liked the best Were Gunsmoke and Bonanza and all the ones out west Had a great admiration for the Marlbouro Man And if Little Joe could be a cowboy, anybody can So he left behind the homestead and a farmer named Saville He Loaded up the Mustang and rode off for the hills He wasn't far along the way and ended up his trip When General Motors offered him a tool and die apprentiship chorus Now his boots are tooled leather, pointy toes with silver tips But he don't wear no lasso or chaps upon his hips He has to ride a lot of bull but he works the holidays Cause if he can't be a cowboy he'll round up that double pay chorus He tried to be a cowboy but that wasn't with his luck Now his horse is made of steel and we all call it Buck His memories are of a time when people called him Tex But now his only dowgy is a puppy dog named Rex chorus whistle, yow............
