Story behind the song
There's a lot of themes touched upon here, so the song isn't truly about just one thing.
If I were to be broad about it, it's just about the state that the world's in, but it touches on a lot of other stuff, such as the epidemic of apathy, heaven and hell, mythology, guilt, regret, etc.
Lyrics
The blood on my hands refuses to wash
Cleanse my past for the sake of the future
This weight on my mind refuses to recede
Just taking yesterday one step at a time
Still refusing to live for today
I'm hardly lining these pockets with gold
Just serving my fellow man
Take this body
To the ocean
Watch as the sirens
Pull me under
This is an
Effigy
Of the times
And this mortal coil
I find myself trapped
Break these chains for me
Disorganised, immeasureable
I've found a place in heaven
No longer miserable
Discontent with being a slave
I wish to venture back there again
Sin does not exist
Just crime and punishment, pride and prejudice
Concisely human emotions
Precisely imperfect
No longer living
No longer dying
Just paving the way for this fragile existence
Just carving this coffin
And sculpting the wood
To bury my dead, and salute those who came before
I'll tip my hat to them
Drink up men
For tomorrow we'll greet St Peter
And see the pearly gates.
We've served our time in hell
