All through Midgard the winter of winters shall fall upon father and mother and son as lupine jaws swallow the sun and the earth shakes Loki free of his chains Fenris his wolfson shall open his maw with flames that gnash at the sky. Old Eggther grins upon his grave. With harp he sings for Ragnarok. The red rooster crows to wake the giants and the gold one calls to wake the gods and the rooster with the feathers of rust shall wake the dead in Hel. From sea and ocean, Loki's children rise up from the deep. And Jormungand, the endless serpent will breathe poison through the earth. From the east the giants will sail on a ship of nails and from the north Loki will sail with the hosts of Hel. From the south the fire giants shall break the rainbow bridge and all the ships shall sail to-ward the final battlefield. The Guardian of gods will sound the horn to warn of Loki's fast approach. Odin and Thor, in battle dress prepare for war on Vigrid plain. Valhalla gates gape open wide. The worlds resound with the warriors' stride The worldtree shakes from root to peak and so begins Ragnarok! With helmet gold and magic spear Odin stalked toward Fenrir and there he died by wolfish jaw to be avenged by family law. Then Jormungand who shakes the oceans died beneath Thor's magic hammer but poisoned by his foe's hot breath Thor perished after nine slow steps. Surtr with his flaming sword will burn alive the land and all will die beneath the flames but a woman and a man.
