Lyrics
Welcome, and thanks for listening! This is Archie Wayne Mangold II, aka Vanilla Shadoe. I got the name when Shadoe Stevens was host of American Top 40 and Vanilla Ice was climbing the charts. (Ice, ice baby!) Obviously, my music has nothing to do with either one of them, but I just thought the name sounded cool, light and dark, sort of like Vanilla Fudge. I've had three songs on Soundclick.com for a while now. "I'm Back" and "Hanging Around" date back to song fragments I developed while playing toys with my sister. "Shadoeland" is simply a play on the band name, Vanilla Shadoe. At some point, I will record a vocal track for them, but for now all I have is the microphone that came with my G3, and the sound quality wouldn't be all that great. As I was working on these songs I tried a number of different experiments, and I saved several "alternate" versions of these songs. The demo version of "I'm Back" was my first serious attempt to use the shareware Soundtracker program PlayerPro, and as such it was closer to electronica than what I had in mind. It's at a very rough stage and has a number of instrumental placeholders. The "Alternate" version is more advanced, but still contains a number of elements from the Demo version. The "Rough" version contains some instrumental tracks behind the verses that didn't quite work out, and a shorter intro. Just for fun I added an "unplugged," acoustic version of the song. On the other hand, "Hanging Around" uses two very simple patterns I worked out on the piano years ago. It was more of a quick-and-dirty mix and didn't take long at all. I'm still not satisfied with "Shadoeland." I was trying to write more of a rock song, but for some reason I was channelling "The Yellow Rose of Texas." I added a second bass but wasn't quite able to work out the chords. The result is still more discordant than I what i had in mind. Most of these mixes used the Quicktime MIDI set that comes installed on every Macintosh computer. About a year ago I remixed the songs using sound samples that an outfit called Soundwave had uploaded to the hornet.org soundtracking site. I wanted to amplify the guitars and add some distortion; unfortunately, the samples were too distorted. Oddly enough, the Soundwave version of "Shadoeland" proved more popular on Soundclick than the original version. I've added three outtakes that I might work into future songs. I have a few ideas on future songs that I plan to work on soon. Finally, I'd like to announce that I just opened a page on mp3.com.au in Australia. I'd also like to put in a plug for my cousin Brian Elzey's site on Wholenote.
