Story behind the song
I wanted to get $Bill onto my forthcoming jazz album, so I sat down and wrote this song, and invited him to collab, which he did by providing a wonderfully appropriate lead guitar break. Writing lyrics is a strange business. Start with a random "jazz is like a saxophone" and see where the rhyme takes you, and if you like it then follow the mood and go for it.
Lyrics
Jazz is like a saxophone when the taxi cabs have all gone home and the waiter waiting tables waits no more a late-night club, a smokey haze reminds me of those early days and the blue notes are the ones that I adore The night is warm the crowds have gone, just a few young lovers linger on the singer and the song are slow and so intrinsically wedded to a melody that twists and turns so elegantly as if the dance of life had just begun A million dreams of beauty queens and nights like this in New Orleans are carried on the wings of jazz's own invention it leads you somewhere you don't know but you feel you somehow ought to go in spite of every other good intention yeah, jazz is like a saxophone, heard across a crowded room where lovers catch each others eye and know before the singer sings a line it's just a metaphor, a bottle washed up on the shore a message from another place and time GUITAR BREAK The night is warm the crowds have gone, just a few young lovers linger on the singer and the song are slow and so intrinsically wedded to a melody that twists and turns so elegantly as if the dance of life had just begun
