Story behind the song
A song that is a tribute to Mr Martyn Joseph. Martyn is a singer songwriter who is a big influence in the way I write. I know he would hate something syrupy so hopefully I have managed to write something that isn't but that sums up something of the public man he is.
Lyrics
Troubadour
Verse 1
You cut a lonely figure
In the cold December rain
As I witness heaven shed its tears
I think I feel your pain
Think I feel your burdens
Think I feel the rage
I can sense your anger rising
As you’re taking to the stage
Verse 2
You are part of the tradition
That is so rich in gold
A poet and a prophet
With all your stories to be told
Wearing your heart upon your sleeve
With all the issues you embrace
It’s good to have your questions
Within this human race
Chorus
Troubadour sing out your song
Tell someone’s story once again
Troubadour sing out your song
Help someone through the pain
Verse 3
Articulating faith to us
You don’t flatter to deceive
Your hatred of hypocrisy
Is so easy to believe
Urging us to use our own minds
Prompting us to take our stand
Against all the injustice
That is rampant in this land
Verse 4
You’re a maelstrom of emotions
Complete with bubbling rage
But also sensitivity
Can be seen upon the stage
A trooper armed with pen and string
The only arms you need
In this war you wage ‘gainst apathy
‘Gainst disparity and greed
Chorus Repeat
Verse 5
Not setting out to entertain
You are not a circus clown
Standing right there beside us
You give us hope to carry on
You encourage us to keep the faith
Through the singing of the song
Together with you we’re at home
This is the place that we belong
